History

Hoyer, Hoyer & Smith, PLLC, was established by Gene Hoyer in 1965.  Gene, and his brother, Ralph, built the firm into one of the leading law firms in the region.

Ralph Hoyer is recognized as one of the state's leading business law experts. He is one of only a few West Virginia practitioners named as "Lawyer of the Year" in 2014 by Best Lawyers and has achieved the highest AV rating from Martindale‑Hubbell. He received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Marquette University, and his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Baltimore. Ralph served with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and graduated from the U.S. Naval Officers' Nuclear Power School with a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering. He is a member of the Kanawha County and West Virginia State Bars.

David Hoyer has extensive experience in business law, bankruptcy and corporate law. He is a member of the West Virginia Bar, the West Virginia and Kanawha County Bar Associations and the American Trial Lawyers Association. He received an academic scholarship towards his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University in Political Science. He was awarded the St. George Tucker Brooke Fellow scholarship for law and earned his law degree from the West Virginia University College of Law.
